AirPods Max headphones randomly connect to devices in other rooms

My AirPods Max headphones have a problem where they'll suddenly switch to another device in the building, even if they're actively in use.  I can be on a conference call, and then suddenly I'm listening to my son's iPad.  When my phone rings, it starts normally, but then switches to the headphones as soon as the call is connected, even if the headphones are flat on my desk in another room.

I've tried every fix suggested online, like setting "When last connected", resetting, and updating firmware.  I've gone through all the procedures with Apple Support.  I've taken it to the Genius Bar and reproduced the problem for them, but they had nothing to suggest.  I've had them sent off to the repair center, but they couldn't do anything.  I've even had them replaced with a new set, but the problem persists.  A senior advisor told me that this is a known problem that Apple has no fix for.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
