Duplicate contact in iMessage group messages
I use iMessage across all of my devices and iMessage is currently configured to send and receive to both my email and my phone number. iMessage is currently set to start new messages from my email.
I was recently abroad and used a data-only esim to get access to data. However, in order to continue receiving messages in my group messages, I needed to add my email to the group chat creating a duplicate contact.
Now that I am back in my home country, I'd like to remove the duplicate contact, however, by removing myself it removes access to the group for both my email and phone number, totally locking me out of the group, even when re-added. I have tried re-adding both my phone number and email independently to see if that resolves the issue, and it does not. I am able to receive messages in the group, but I cannot send them and I cannot access the group settings.
Another group member can remove one of the duplicate contacts, however, that locks certain devices out of the chats. For example, I can send and receive messages to my phone for a certain chat, but I cannot send messages to the group on my MacBook.
Interested to hear if anyone else has encountered this issue, and if there is a solution.
