why do the verification codes sent to my mac NEVER work

Anytime I'm on my computer trying to sign in with my Apple ID, or just signing onto the apple website; I get the standard popup of my rough location, the "deny" or "allow" options, and finally it gives me the verification code. Except the codes absolutely never work. Every single time I have to go and find my old iPad, make sure it's charged (and still works), wait for that to turn on and use the verification code sent to it.

I used to be able to use the code sent to my phone back when I used an iPhone. But I don't have an iPhone anymore and my iPad is super old. Once it dies I just won't be able to use verification codes anymore.

Why do my MacBook Pro verifications never work? Is it because I'm also trying to log in on my MacBook? That would make sense, but I'm pretty sure that didn't used to matter on apple devices a handful of years ago. And also, why would they send the code to a device that cannot use it?

Ok good.

Suggest that “Next Time” try using the verification code self-generated by your laptop to see if it possibly works more consistently.

  1. Go to Apple menu  > System Settings, then click your name.
  2. Click Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Click Get a Verification Code.

If there is STILL a problem w/ consistency; check to ensure that your Mac’s internal clock is accurately set, with the proper time zone, AND is configured to auto-sync with a networked time server.

Oh sorry. No I am not logging out of my AppleID on my macbook. The issue is only within internet browsers when there is a website that has the "sign in with AppleID" option (or apple.com).

Also Apple.com tends to log me out automatically everytime I close the tab. I had to use a verification code on this website yesterday just to post my question, and had to do it again to make this reply.

the standard way of logging in to your Mac is with the local username and password created when you first set up your Mac. This does not require an Internet connection or anything to do with your Apple-ID.

if you FORGOT you original password, then as an emergency bypass, you can sometimes log in with your Apple-ID.

This requires an internet connection, and if you have not confirmed anything about your Apple-ID recently AND two-factor authentication is enabled, then you will need to authenticate your Apple-ID using your second factor, often an iPhone or other Apple device.

But that will not log you in, it merely authenticates and validates your Apple-ID. AFTER Authentication, THEN you can use that now valid Apple-ID to attempt to log in to your Mac ON an EMERGENCY basis, provided it also has an Internet connection.

Sorry, my post was poorly worded. This issue isn't when logging in to my mac. This issue is when I try to sign in to a website that has the "sign in with appleID" option, and also apple.com.

But you may have answered my question anyways, whenever I get this popup posted below, which is followed by the verification code; is that supposed to be two-factor authentication? Because if so, that would explain why I can't use the code on my mac to sign in to a website also on my mac.

"sign in to a new device". what a joke

That specific picture I just got from the Apple page on how to use two-factor verification. I had a whole paragraph explaining why I used the picture I found online rather than a screenshot of my own, but then I deleted it because I tend to ramble at times.

The last two times I came to this website Apple did NOT require the two-factor nonsense, it just signed me in no problem. I'm hoping the Apple mothership was tired of my confusing questions and told my mac to do better.

I can confirm that the timezone settings are correct on my mac, but I am behind on an update so I'm hoping that explains why I can't find any Sign-in & Security options in my System Preferences. I have Security Preferences, but that's not helpful.

Also this problem has existed for multiple system updates now, so I am certain that is not the source of my problem. Although I will update it soon.
