I am trying to find out what would cause my phone to get a text with an Apple ID Code when I did not go anywhere that would require validation. Assuming that someone is trying to buy something or hack into my account

Could be somebody mis-specified your number and this is their code, or maybe somebody has your Apple ID password. Maybe something else?
I’d change your Apple ID password, if this was a two-factor verification code.

got a message with an Apple ID code. I have not accessed anything that would require this
