I'm looking for a way to color-code different events on one calendar. I do not want multiple calendars but would like to color different events so I know by color what type of event it is. I can't believe there isn't a way to do that. Please help! Thank you

Colour coding can be done only at the calendar level in Apple's Calendar app. Individual events in a calendar cannot be changed to a different colour.
If you require otherwise you might want to look at third-party (non-Apple) calendars. There are several you can buy from the App Store and these might have that ability.
