Compass Dial Won't Stop Spinning

The compass dial on my new-to-me refurb iPhone 13mini won't stop spinning (counterclockwise, FWIW). It is not in a case/there is no magnet nearby. I could leave it on a flat surface, and come back an hour later, and it would still be spinning, spinning, spinning. I got the phone a bit less than 3 months ago, and the compass was frozen for some weeks (NOTHING would get it to budge), and now it's spinning continuously. (It has never actually worked, despite many attempts at the magical figure eights, etc., to calibrate it.)

I'm currently running 17.4.1 (yes, I realize I have an update waiting to get me to 17.5.1, yes, I will do the update, but I don't feel it's likely the update will fix the issue.)

Yeah, every app using the compass would spin around wildly. Have decided it is a hardware issue. I bought a new 13mini refurb (not apple store - they don't offer the 13mini), and used Quick Start to transfer data from the old 13mini (that did NOT go smoothly!), but now that all is transferred, the compass and associated apps work fine on the new 13mini. JUST under the wire to get a refund on the old 13mini.

I can't keep up with all the devices and software that don't work correctly!

Thanks for your help.

Third party. Couldn't find one at apple. But blahhhh... totally forgot about a forced restart! That seems to get it to settle, though it does take a good minute of spinning before it does so. Thank you for the reminder on that point. (I do drag my feet on updates. There has never been a time I've been sorry I HAVEN'T updated, but there have been plenty of times I've regretted updating. This goes for all devices and software, not just iPhones.)

Sorry, I was thinking of another conversation on another site about Apple Watch. I spread myself a little thin at times. Sorry for the confusion.

Does the iPhone have a case on it? Is the iPhone setting on a glass or wooden surface when you open the compass?

Have you tried any of the third party apps (free!) that are available in most Apple App Stores?

Let’s see what happens when we introduce another app?

You’re welcome.

Buying refurbished brings with it the troubles and quality controls of the refurbisher. I’ve had very good luck purchasing refurbished from Apple. The fact the you had issues doing the data transfer also reinforces my belief that the original refurbished device had hardware issues that weren’t caught during the quality assurance process.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Well, the forced restart solution doesn't seem to really solve the problem completely. Even if the compass is staying (relatively) still, any app that relies on the compass spins wildly, rendering it useless. I did do the update, and the compass is spinning still, and even the forced restart won't help it now.

My sense is that it's stuck calibrating, and if I turn OFF calibration in settings, then the compass will not move at all. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the compass app a time or two as well.

Anything else to try here?
