Track pad on a new Mac book air

I have a 2 month old air (M2), since day one when I go to select a link I get a drop down list( for example "Open link in tab" etc), this happens about 8 out of 10 times. It is very annoying, am I not hitting the track pad in the correct spot? Is there an option to adjust this? This is not my first Mac book, but its certainly the first time I have had to deal with this annoying issue.

That drop down list appears with a secondary click. (Sometimes called a right click).

What I do is turn that option off entirely and when I want it I use control click (hold the control key down when clicking). That may or may not be preferable for you as individual preferences vary.

See the following from Right-click on Mac - Apple Support

Set up your trackpad to Control-click an item

To Control-click using only your trackpad, you can change its settings.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Trackpad  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the “Secondary click” pop-up menu on the right, then choose an option.
  3. You can choose to Control-click by clicking with one or two fingers.
