iPad stopped charging from laptop

I bought a usb A to C cable for my 10th gen iPad to connect it to my windows laptop. The cable is the belkin A to C from the apple website. It worked well for about a month but suddenly no longer charges the iPad when connected. It is however recognized by iTunes and spacedesk when plugged in. Communication happens but charging does not. When I plug in a different A to C cable I have I get the opposite, charging but no communication. When I plug it into my desktop pc with the belkin cable it’s the same result as the laptop. The belkin cable charges and communicates when plugged into a Samsung s22, and it charges the iPad when plugged into a powered usb hub. I am quite confused

Windows, Windows 10

I looked in the device manager and found that one of the usb controller devices was in a D3 power state. I unchecked “allow this computer to turn off this device to save power” under the power management tab and now my iPad charges and communicates through the belkin A to C cable

I can see several potential causes for what you have described.

Please be aware a Laptop port (USB-A) is likely to have an output rating 500mA at 5 Volts. That calculates to 2.5W maximum output. Your iPad 10th Gen uses a USB-C input port which implies it is probably designed for higher rated input sources. Apple's USB-C power adaptors are almost all rated for at least 20W which means it will be rated for multi-voltage and current levels, probably with full PD (Power Delivery) compliance.

Having said that, I am using a USB-A Lightning cable with Apple's Lightning to USB-C adaptor, and it manages to charge my iPhone 15 Pro Max from a 2.4A USB-A socket in the car. I admit I have not yet tested this combo with my new iPad Pro.

If you have a higher rated USB-A power adaptor available you could test with the Belkin cable. This might show if the problem is simply that the laptop can't provide enough power. It would also be worth testing with a different cable simply to show whether there might be embedded electronics in the cable, which might have failed.

The computer went into sleep mode over night. When I woke it this morning the iPad was back to not charging. I have usb suspend disabled in power management. All usb hub devices in the device manager have the power saving option disabled. One of the two usb composite devices in the device manager are in the d3 power state but those devices don’t have a power management tab. Back to confused
