It’s very very strange that the oldest iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence is the iPhone 15 Pro, but maybe because it has the oldest processor that can do a lot of work, the A17 Pro. Only iPads and Macs with M processors can have Apple Intelligence, such as the iPad Pro M4, M1 chip MacBooks, etc. Even though newly announced Apple software versions like iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS sequoia, etc are compatible with other devices, like iPad (9th generation), iPhone XS Max, etc

Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that has an Apple Silicon processor and 8+ GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Here I use "Apple Silicon" loosely to include both A-series chips and M-series chips, since both have the same basic machine code architecture, and Apple got M-series chips by scaling up A-series designs.

No Mac that lacks an Apple Silicon processor is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Apple Silicon Macs only. 68K, PowerPC, and Intel Macs need not apply.

No iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has less than 8 GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. All Apple devices with M-series chips have at least 8 GB of RAM. But among those with A-series chips, only iPhone 15 Pros and iPad 15 Pro Maxes have 8 GB of RAM. Every other iPhone or iPad with an A-series chip has less.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max stand out because, for devices with A-series chips, they have an unusually large amount of RAM. As much as a base M3 MacBook Air, M3 iMac, or M2 Mac mini.

At the moment, Apple Intelligence is available in beta on the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, and any iPad or Mac with an M1 chip and later, with Siri and device language set to US English. This fall Apple Intelligence will get its public release as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and MacOS Sequoia. Apple's senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy, said that “while it would be possible to run Apple Intelligence on older, less powerful iPhones, it wouldn't be fast enough.”

Device restrictions are going to be tied to the available hardware. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the A17 processor with a 6 core GPU, where the standard iPhone 15 has the A16 processor with only a 5 core GPU. The newly announced AI features are going to need more processing power that is currently only available in the Pro and Max versions of the iPhone 15. The iPhone 14 also has only the 5 core GPU and the iPhone 13 has a 4 core GPU. There apparently is not enough computing power in those models.

Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

"Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall.

Some features, additional languages, and platforms will be coming over the course of the next year."

I believe that all of the platforms on the initial compatibility list have Apple Silicon processors (A-series or M-series) and at least 8 GB of RAM. There are no Intel Macs to be seen, and no iPhones or iPads with less than 8 GB of RAM to be seen. It's easy to guess that Apple wants to be able to count on the presence of Neural Engine hardware and a reasonable amount of RAM.

That said, the footnote on the Preview page holds out the possibility (not a guarantee) that other iPhones might get Apple Intelligence features "over the course of the next year" after the beta comes out.

I have an iPhone 14 (base model) and i’m able to run chat gpt 4o, even 4o1 (since i pay for it) and it’s faster than my computer (completely optimized), so i don’t understand how the cores are the issue

ChatGPT doesn't run on your phone. It's using the computing resources of some server on the Internet. Apple Intelligence will run locally on your phone, in many cases.

We do know that the iPhones which are in line to get the Apple Intelligence beta have different processors, and more RAM, than the iPhones which are not in line to get it. Some people think that the number of cores may be important, but my guess is that the big issue is RAM.

Why can't Apple do this and victimize models like 14 pro max 13 pro max when Samsung offers cloud artificial intelligence technology even to its old devices?

You really need to read this thread so you have a better understanding. Apple is more concerned about privacy and safety of your information, so it is doing on-device processing and keeping your information on your device where it belongs. Where it uses outside servers, it has developed Private Compute.

The iPhone 14 or 13 can still use the ChatGPT web interface just like you can on Samsung devices, but what Apple is doing now is not done on any Samsung device.

My iPad supports it. If you see a rainbow outline at the edge of the screen, it means that intelligent models have been installed. To install them, just follow the on-screen instructions.

Apple has not released iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates containing the Apple Intelligence beta. Therefore, if you have Apple Intelligence on your iPad, you must be running some sort of development or test version, one which is even more "beta" than the promised beta.

The list of iPhones, iPads, and Macs that will get the Apple Intelligence beta – when it comes out – can be found at the end of this page: Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple . Note that recently Apple has made the footnotes a little bit more detailed, adding a note about when English (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, UK) language support will become available.

Like, I understand apple intelligence can not be on any iPhone, but why can’t just the new Siri ui be on any? And if ChatGPT works on iPhone 11, and Siri ChatGPT integration doesn’t, then what did apple really do?

It's called Security. ChatGPT processes all information on their servers and you are simply sending a request to a web interface and receiving a response. Apple is not comfortable with trusting a third party with your information and you should not either. Apple Intelligence uses on-device processing to protect your data and when accessing third party companies such as ChatGPT uses a process called Private Cloud Compute.

https://security.apple.com/blog/private-cloud-compute/

This on-device processing to protect your data requires resources not found in devices prior to the iPhone 15 Pro, such as 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB and 6 GPU cores instead of 5, along with the faster A series processor found in those and newer devices.

You can continue to use the web based ChatGPT, but you are trusting them with your information that you provide. For Apple to implement an Artificial Intelligence service, that is not acceptable.

The iPhone 15 Pro uses A18 SOC (processors). It actually has the latest SOC for iPhone, not the oldest.

That's the latest SoC for iPhones – and the oldest that will be able to run the Apple Intelligence beta when that beta first comes out. All of the older iPhone SoCs are in iPhones that won't get that beta.

Apple has left open the possibility that in the year following the introduction of the Apple Intelligence beta, there will be support for more platforms. They have not made iron-clad promises as to models, or times, but it is easy enough to guess that if they can figure a way to port it to less capable iPhones, that iPhones which have 6 GB of RAM might be the most likely to get Apple Intelligence in a "second pass."

The iPhone models that have 6 GB of RAM are the iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14 (all variants), 15, and 15 Plus.

I’m trading up my Pro Max 14 for the Pro Max 16 because the A16 Chipset wasn’t designed with AI in mind.

The Apple iPhone 16 phones use an A18 Chipset and (and iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro) both Chipsets have the processing capability to run most Apple Intelligence queries “On-Device”. In instances where off device assistance is required you are informed prior to the query being released to the Cloud.

While earlier Chipsets theoretically can run Apple Intelligence the result(s) would be frustratingly slow.

Apple hasn't told us the specific criteria that they used to determine compatibility for the initial Apple Intelligence beta. Still, it is once again worth noting that

  • All of the devices – Macs, iPads, or iPhones – that are scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta have Apple Silicon chips (A-series or M-series) with Neural Engines, and at least 8 GB of RAM.
  • Every iPhone with 8 GB of RAM is on the list to get the Apple Intelligence beta. These phones are the iPhone 15, 15 Pro Max, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max.
  • No iPhone with less than 8 GB of RAM is on the list to get the beta. Apple says that they might bring some of the Apple Intelligence features to some of these phones over the course of the next year. No promises. My guess is that even Apple themselves do not know how things will play out yet. Getting this thing out the door for all of the devices that meet the base hardware requirements has got to be much more important – from a business standpoint – than shoehorning it onto older devices whose hardware resources are marginal.

I 100% agree with this, I have a 14 Pro Max, there’s not that much of a difference from 14 to 15 so why should I pay more when I already have my phone? Why should I pay more for a couple features that could be added to my own phone? Please read this apple and actually consider

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has an A16 Bionic processor and 6 GB of RAM.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has an A17 Pro processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Even if it turns out that the difference in processor speed is not significant, the amount of RAM is likely to be very significant when it comes to running AI models locally on the phone. Maybe Apple can get some features running on phones with only 6 GB of RAM, and maybe not. They're not making any firm commitments – and I suspect that is on purpose.

Apple isn't here and they won't see your request. This is a user to user ONLY forum, which Apple doesn't participate, nor monitor for feedback. It isn't likely your request could be honored, even if they did see it. Apple Intelligence 100% requires an iPhone with 8GB of RAM, which your 14 Pro Max doesn't have. Thus, it isn't capable of running AI and why you won't get it.

and why won’t iphone 15 plus get apple intelligence even though it’s from the same generation as the iPhone 15 pro and pro max , it’s must be fair because it is from the same generation

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus did not get to have all of the features of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max just "because [they are] from the same generation."

For instance, the 15 and 15 Plus did not get

  • Titanium cases
  • Always-on displays
  • USB 3 transfer speeds on their USB-C ports
  • The third (Telephoto) camera

What seems most pertinent with respect to Apple Intelligence is that the 15 and 15 Plus got an A16 Bionic chip, and 6 GB of RAM; while the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max got an A17 Pro chip, and 8 GB of RAM.

All of the platforms that are scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta when it first comes out have 8 GB, or more, of RAM. All of them. Which strongly suggests that the fact that the 15 and 15 Plus only have 6 GB of it might have something to do with why they are not on the list.
