It’s very very strange that the oldest iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence is the iPhone 15 Pro, but maybe because it has the oldest processor that can do a lot of work, the A17 Pro. Only iPads and Macs with M processors can have Apple Intelligence, such as the iPad Pro M4, M1 chip MacBooks, etc. Even though newly announced Apple software versions like iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS sequoia, etc are compatible with other devices, like iPad (9th generation), iPhone XS Max, etc

Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that has an Apple Silicon processor and 8+ GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Here I use "Apple Silicon" loosely to include both A-series chips and M-series chips, since both have the same basic machine code architecture, and Apple got M-series chips by scaling up A-series designs.

No Mac that lacks an Apple Silicon processor is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Apple Silicon Macs only. 68K, PowerPC, and Intel Macs need not apply.

No iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has less than 8 GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. All Apple devices with M-series chips have at least 8 GB of RAM. But among those with A-series chips, only iPhone 15 Pros and iPad 15 Pro Maxes have 8 GB of RAM. Every other iPhone or iPad with an A-series chip has less.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max stand out because, for devices with A-series chips, they have an unusually large amount of RAM. As much as a base M3 MacBook Air, M3 iMac, or M2 Mac mini.

When you query ChatGPT all information is sent to and processed in the Cloud (somewhere); the processing power required to generate an answer is not dependent on either the Chipset, Neural Engine, Memory, or GPU core.

The Apple iPhone 16 phones use an A18 Chipset and (and iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro) both Chipsets have the processing capability to run most Apple Intelligence queries “On-Device”. In instances where off device assistance is required you are informed prior to the query being released to the Cloud.

While earlier Chipsets theoretically can run Apple Intelligence the result(s) would be frustratingly slow.

Now when, that iOS 18 has been released

The first version of iOS 18 does not include Apple Intelligence. That apparently is taking a bit longer to get ready than the rest of iOS 18.

Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

"Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of an iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia update this fall."

Why AI will not work on 14 pro max?

The most likely explanation is the the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have some important piece of hardware that other iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro Max, don't.

For instance, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has 6 GB of RAM. That's more than most iPhones have – but every one of the platforms slated to get the Apple Intelligence beta has at least 8 GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have 8 GB of RAM and are the only iPhones to have that much.

This means we need to change the phone every year 👍 Good Job

Whether or not the iPhone 14 Pro Max gets Apple Intelligence, it's still in line to get iOS 18.

Apple Intelligence, a set of AI features, is only available on certain iPhone models because they meet specific requirements:

Chip: The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have Apple's A17 Pro chip, which is required for Apple Intelligence.

RAM: iPhones that support Apple Intelligence have 8 GB of RAM, while older iPhones like the iPhone 14 have 6 GB. AI models need to be stored in RAM or vRAM when run locally, and RAM is faster than SSD drives.

Software: Apple Intelligence requires iOS 18.1.

Language: The device and Siri languages must be set to a supported language.

Storage: The device needs at least 4 GB of storage.

That is so true!!! It's just a new version of the Siri, and how can iphone 13 not be capable of it!..!!!? And the rest, it is just AI!!! Why is iphone 13 not be capable of Apple intelligence???

It's already been explained. Apple Intelligence will use a LOT of RAM. RAM which an iPhone 15 or lower does NOT have. It will require an iPhone with at least 8GB of RAM. It's not as simple as just an expanded Siri. In fact, far from it. And from my research, just the AI portion when released will take up 4GB of memory on any iPhone capable of using it.

So now you know why iPhone 13 is NOT capable.

They are not. The iPhone 14 received the update to iOS 18, and will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future with software updates.

It simply lacks the resources to properly run the very demanding Apple Intelligence processes. But is in no way considered a dinosaur.

Apple intelligence is just for the iPhone 15 and 16, but ChatGPT works everywhere!

ChatGPT runs on servers, in "the cloud". A lot of the Apple Intelligence features run locally, on your iPhone. Or – as Apple puts it,

Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

"Draws on your personal context without allowing anyone else to access your personal data — not even Apple."

Now I don't know that all of the Apple Intelligence features rely strictly on local processing on the phone, but I am betting that enough of them do that you need computing resources on the phone to handle them.

Well, that’s stange.. ChatGPT runs perfectly on my 14 pro max. So this excuse is invalid.

Sure, ChatGPT runs fine on your phone. It's an interface to it. It's not on your phone, which is what Apple Intelligence will bring and why having 8GB of RAM is required to bring this to an iPhone. Your supposition demonstrates a lack of understanding on the difference.

It has 6GB of memory compared to the 8GB found on the models that support Apple Intelligence and also 5 GPU cores compared to 6. The Pro versions of the iPhones have always been faster and more capable of the standard version, and also at an increased price point.

If they did allow it on the standard iPhone 15 model or even your 14, then this Support Site would be flooded with complaints on how the new iOS version has slowed their phone down. This is simply due to the hardware that is available on the device and your phone will run iOS 18 just fine, but won't be able to use the more CPU intensive features found in Apple Intelligence.

Apple is NOT forcing you to upgrade. Your iPhone does today exactly what it did the day you bought it. If you want Apple Intelligence, which was never promised when you bought your iPhone 14 Pro however, then you will need to upgrade. Think about it. When you buy a car in one year, and the car manufacturer releases a new car, with new features, does your car get the new features? Of course it doesn't. The reality is your iPhone lacks the RAM required to run Apple Intelligence. That doesn't mean your phone is obsolete or you need to replace it UNLESS you feel having Apple Intelligence is a feature compelling enough to replace your phone with one which can use the feature.

Also, your assertion Apple's competitors don't play like that is patently false. They most assuredly do release new features which older phones are not capable of taking advantage of.

That is not correct. iPhone 14 Pro models will be be able to run Apple Intelligence. Per Apple directly, Apple Intelligence will become available on iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models.

With the typo fixed: "iPhone 14 Pro models will not be able to run Apple Intelligence."

Why can't Apple do this and victimize models like 14 pro max 13 pro max when Samsung offers cloud artificial intelligence technology even to its old devices?

Have you been following the thread? Apple is not "victimizing" the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max. It sounds like Apple Intelligence is designed to do much of its processing "on-device" … and to keep your data and your queries from being "mined" by companies looking to build profiles of you.

Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

"Apple Intelligence is designed to protect your privacy at every step. It’s integrated into the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac through on-device processing. So it’s aware of your personal information without collecting your personal information. And with groundbreaking Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can draw on larger server-based models, running on Apple silicon, to handle more complex requests for you while protecting your privacy."

On-device processing means that the iPhone hardware itself – not some server in a corporate data center – has to be up to the task of storing the AI model(s) and doing all of the related computations. It places more demands on the hardware than shipping your data off to who-knows-where, to be processed there.
