It’s very very strange that the oldest iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence is the iPhone 15 Pro, but maybe because it has the oldest processor that can do a lot of work, the A17 Pro. Only iPads and Macs with M processors can have Apple Intelligence, such as the iPad Pro M4, M1 chip MacBooks, etc. Even though newly announced Apple software versions like iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS sequoia, etc are compatible with other devices, like iPad (9th generation), iPhone XS Max, etc

Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that has an Apple Silicon processor and 8+ GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Here I use "Apple Silicon" loosely to include both A-series chips and M-series chips, since both have the same basic machine code architecture, and Apple got M-series chips by scaling up A-series designs.

No Mac that lacks an Apple Silicon processor is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. Apple Silicon Macs only. 68K, PowerPC, and Intel Macs need not apply.

No iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has less than 8 GB of RAM is scheduled to get the Apple Intelligence beta. All Apple devices with M-series chips have at least 8 GB of RAM. But among those with A-series chips, only iPhone 15 Pros and iPad 15 Pro Maxes have 8 GB of RAM. Every other iPhone or iPad with an A-series chip has less.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max stand out because, for devices with A-series chips, they have an unusually large amount of RAM. As much as a base M3 MacBook Air, M3 iMac, or M2 Mac mini.

Apple intelligence right now in 2024 is only supported for iPhone 14 Pro models, iPhone 15 series and iPhone 16 series

That is not correct. iPhone 14 Pro models will NOT be be able to run Apple Intelligence. Per Apple directly, Apple Intelligence will become available on iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models. This also means that iPhone 15 and 15 Plus (not Pro models) will also not be able to run Apple Intelligence.

iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 is not on the list to get the Apple Intelligence beta. In a footnote on the Apple Intelligence Preview page, Apple says that

"Some … additional platforms will be coming over the course of the next year." (emphasis mine)

Taking that into account, maybe the iPhone 14 will get some of the Apple Intelligence features, some time during the course of the year. Maybe it will never get any. Apple is being careful not to raise false hopes by making any promises.

6 core instead of 5 means the 5 core won't run same SW at all? Suuuuure. the app will just be 20-30 per cent slower.

Mac Jim ID mentioned the differences in the number of GPU cores. I think it more likely that the key difference is in the amount of RAM – which is only 6 GB for any of the iPhone 14-family phones, compared to 8 GB on iPhones that will be getting the Apple Intelligence beta.

Device restrictions are going to be tied to the available hardware. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the A17 processor with a 6 core GPU, where the standard iPhone 15 has the A16 processor with only a 5 core GPU. The newly announced AI features are going to need more processing power that is currently only available in the Pro and Max versions of the iPhone 15. The iPhone 14 also has only the 5 core GPU and the iPhone 13 has a 4 core GPU. There apparently is not enough computing power in those models.

this is not a rational reason, chargpt can run on a website on every device, dose 1 extra core existed in iPhone 15 really matters? or it is just an excuse?

you should add Apple Intelligence to iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 Pro Max does not have the A17 Pro chip and also only a 5 core GPU compared to the 6 core GPU on the iPhone 15 Pro/Max. I would suspect these pages would then be filled with these complaints:

  • iOS 18 slowed down my phone
  • Apple is deliberating slowing down my phone

It is true that it is difficult to make everyone happy and software always outpaces hardware. There is always going to be a new iPhone that is better right around the corner.

Of course, you can always send feedback to let Apple know how you feel.

i agree, it’s ridiculous how we have phone 2 years old and we can’t get basic features

Basic?

None of what Apple Intelligence does is basic.

You got all the basic features from the iOS 18 update already with the new UI elements.

Apple intelligence is pretty advanced and requires a lot of processing power. Hardly "basic". Offers no new UI, only new features within the existing UI that make use of it.

This seems like an excuse to garnish more phone sales.

Gasp.... a company trying to push sales of their wares... who would ever think of such an evil act?

ChatGPT can be accessed online.

Yes. Apple Intelligence is not reliant on it. It can use it if allowed for better answers, but it is not dependent on it.

Not to mention the iPhone 15 has been discontinued.

No. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have been discontinued. The iPhone 15 and 15Plus are still being made and sold by Apple and still won't get Apple Intelligence.

Also, discontinuation has no bearing on what the device hardware can or cannot do or what features it has access to. It just means Apple is no longer manufacturing it or actively selling it.

It's still fully supported and will receive OS updates for the foreseeable future.

By "additional platforms" I think they mean other Apple devices like the Vision Pro, probably new HomePods and new Apple TVs, maybe Windows PCs even.

Would not expect them to bring it to other iPhone models not already listed as supported. Those would not be "additional platforms" Just the same platform with less resources.

If they do, it would be the first time Apple adds support for older devices after releasing it for newer ones, so not something I would expect or tell any one else to expect. If it happens, that is great, but honestly, it's a reach.
