Time out of sync

My 2020 MacBook Pro continues to go out of sync with the real time. I'm unsure if its every time I close the lid or if it occurs while the computer is in use, but I will glance at the time and it will be behind by some random amount of time. I have tried restarting the computer and turning off/on the "set time automatically" setting, but the problem continues to occur. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas for solutions? My apple care ran out so I doubt apple will help me

the time stops being accurately updated when your Mac sleeps. But your Mac knows that, and should be trying to use a network time server to update when it wakes up.

if you have entered a network time server that does not work anymore, that could be a problem. That is why the default is time.apple.com, but you are free to enter another time server if you wish. recommended is to choose time.apple.com off the (very short) list.

if you battery is drawn down close to zero, the time can get really wonky.
