I have tried to close the airtag cover by turning clockwise after changing the batt, but no matter what I do, it won't turn. So frustrated to have to buy another--it tweets so connection isn't an issue and tabs are intact; I changed others successfully. What to do--an annoying problem and these are expensive.

Either the replacement battery is swollen or there is something in the AirTag that is preventing the battery from fully seating. If you have already tried a different battery, and/or a different brand battery, then I suggest that you visit your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them help you out.
Thanks--I tried a few batts--no luck--ordered new airtags. It's an Apple thing--keep em buying.
