Are AirTags effective for Vehicle Security despite the risk of thieves locating them?

Hi All, I have just purchased a 4 pack of AirTags after watching a YouTube doc regarding vehicle tracking and the removal of the speaker. I know this is messing with the product and probably invalidates the warranty but what is the use of putting these in a vehicle when they tell the thief where they are ? I have watched multiple videos regarding removal of the speaker and have followed them to the book. I have now ruined 2 as they no longer work and do not pick up Bluetooth! Have Apple done something to AirTags to disable them if the speaker is removed ? I am not a stalker, I am just adding another level of security to my vehicle. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
