Setting up new phone with old phone error message solution

I tried at least a half dozen times to set up my new iPhone 15 to the point where I thought the phone was defective or downright evil.

  1. Apple support says to make sure the old phone is updated to the latest version. It also says to restart both phones after waiting 30 seconds. Outcome? Doing so raises your hopes only to crush them again. But it can't hurt, can it? Yes, yes it can on an emotional level, but you can always go to a therapist.

Finally I figured it out.

  1. Plug in both phones and set them side by side
  2. Fire up the new phone if you haven't already.
  3. Go to settings on your old phone and scroll down to the bottom where it says transfer data. Obviously press the button.
  4. You'll get to the part where you're asked if you want to use the cloud to transfer the data from old to new.
  5. Don't use the cloud for anything! They'll tell you it's risk not to use the cloud. They'll even try to lure you in by saying that it's free to do so, but be strong. Resist.
  6. Use the other option and transfer the data from your old phone to your new one. It took about 15 minutes to do this (if you don't count all the other hours I spent in emotional distress as I tried to figure it out).

I hope this helps you. If not, I throw my hands up in despair.

You can easily use quick transfer or restore from backups, as outlined in this link Transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support I've done this plenty of time with no issues.
