why do they only give us 5gb of cloud storage ? phones are now over a 1TB

Everything that happened during my infuriating iPhone installation was to sell more storage make me think my phone is too small, what a scam. 5gb of cloud storage might work on my iPod from 2008.

See Get temporary iCloud storage when you buy a new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If you upgraded to a higher system version and were operating at the limits of the old one then I am guessing the newer iOS may be taking up more room and crowding out the old data.

I just use a computer and I transfer all my bulky photos off my iPhone once I get 50 or more on there. I have 4 devices backed up to my 5 GB. ;-)

You can choose. I manage to get by with 5 GB. If you want to use iCloud then there are plans for various levels of storage.

Read this support article for instructions on how to upgrade to iCloud+ --> Upgrade to iCloud+ - Apple Support

Or you can choose not to pay for more and use a computer to back up, sync, etc.
