I am struggling to hardwire my iPhone7. I have an adapter, Lightning to Ethernet (which Amazon tells me is compatible) and an Ethernet cable. This set up works great with my much newer iPad but not at all with my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You have to connect your iPhone to a suitable adapter such as the Belkin Ethernet + Power Adapter with Lightning Connector - Apple.
Then in settings an option for Ethernet should pop up.
You may need to purchase the Belkin adapter sold by Apple to make it work.

Restated: Will “WiFi Calling” work w/o WiFi for the “last mile” of the connection ???
or rather … Can an iPhone connect to a LAN & communicate thru a WAN via it’s Lightning/USB interface ???
I tend to agree w/ your assessment, but w/o any substantive basis for doing so.
I don’t think hardwired ethernet is supported for the iPhone. It is fundamentally a wireless device.

Presumably a widely available USB-C to Ethernet dongle should also work on iPhone 15 and later … ???
