In Itunes it was an easy matter to have songs from a song list play consecutively. Can Music be configured to do the same thing? Or is this another instance of Apple breaking that which was not broken.

iTunes or Music will typically play all checked tracks in the current list. If that isn't happening for you make sure that you don't have the repeat one track mode selected (see Shuffle or repeat songs in Music on Mac - Apple Support) and that all of the tracks in the list are checked (cmd-clicking any empty check box will check them all, which may also explain how they become unchecked). One more obscure reason for tracks not to play is if you have shuffle play selected and all tracks in the list are marked as Skip When Shuffling.

The blue text in my previous post is a link to an Apple support document that details the repeat and shuffle features. The Controls > Shuffle and Controls > Repeat submenus are probably the easiest to review.
Another potential issue you might run into if you've moved your library around or migrated from iTunes to Music is that content might not be where the library expects it. In such cases Music may place an exclamation mark against tracks it cannot play. If you have an iTunes Match or Apple Music subscription the app may potentially swap from a broken local link to a cloud link that will stream or download on demand, but this tends to work one track at a time so could interrupt normal playback.

All boxes are checked, so that's not the problem.
How can I tell if the "Shuffle" or "Repeat" buttons are on or off?
I think they are both off. My hunch is that the problem is to do with the list of songs that I want to play is not broken down into a "Playlist" or "Album." It's the whole "Songs" list under "Library." I hope I'm just missing a simple switch. But even if that's the case, Apple has done a great job of obscuring it and making this user's experience very aggravating. Thank you turingtest2 for your answer.
