Music app not opening and reacting on Macbook Pro

Trying to open the Music app... the app logo in the Dock bounces once and that is it. Nothing happens. Not responding at all.

Tried restarting the computer, tried starting up the app with option button and with option+command button, tried starting from the com.apple.Music.plist file. Nothing works. Can not force quit the app because the app is not running. Can not delete and reinstall the app because Apple won't let us do this.

There is no error code. Because nothing happens at all. Just the one bounce of the logo pretending it is starting up, but after that nothing happens.

So now what? Anyone has a solution for this?

Unfortunately no response from Apple. But after a lot of searching myself, I found the solution for me.

I have the app Overkill running for the purpose of stopping iTunes. When it runs (which it automatically does when starting up the MacBook) I experienced this problem. So I went and took a look at the settings of that app and noticed that Music was added to the list. Not by me, so maybe through an update.

Anyway, close the app or delete Music from the Overkill list was the solution.

Hope this works for you (or something similar with a different app).

You're not alone. I realized I've also been impacted by this serious bug on my Mac Studio. There are a number of threads regarding- it appears to have started with the Sonoma 14.3 build. My symptoms are precisely the same as yours- the app icon bounces once and then...nothing. I've tried everything to no avail. Very disappointing that Apple would break its own Music app- especially for those who pay for Apple One, etc.

I don't have the app Overkill or any other that would seemingly create such a problem. Apple Music simply won't open any more on my Mac and there isn't any suggestion Apple is working to create a fix for all of those impacted.

Interestingly, I'm able to access Apple Music- including all my playlists, etc.- on the same Mac by navigating to https://music.apple.com/us/home from any browser. The user experience isn't on par with the Apple Music MacOS app but the ability to access certainly isolates the problem to the MacOS app after one of the Sonoma 14.x updates.

So I "chatted" with Apple Support a few weeks ago and was given a few troubleshooting steps to try but nothing worked. I was told to call back and actually speak with someone and finally accomplished that today. After a couple of additional troubleshooting steps I was directed to reinstall the OS as "Apple Music is built into the OS and this would fix the problem".

Unfortunately, after going through the process of reinstalling Sonoma, Apple Music was not fixed and it still won't open. I was hoping the reinstall would repair things- as Windows reinstalls/repairs typically do- but this wasn't the case.

At this point I'm up to Sonoma 14.5 without Apple Music working on my Mac Studio. As noted earlier, I can access my Apple Music via URL in a web browser and the iOS version on both the iPad Pro and iPhone also perform without issue.

Fix this, Apple!

Oh that does not sound good.

But here is something crazy: I had that problem for a longer time. Put is sooo many hours trying to fix it and nothing worked.... two days ago, that app suddenly opens by itself. I did not do anything because I was working in mails and excel.

I left the app open for two days and I could listen to all the music I have in there.

Today I tried closing the app... and it will not open again. Back to the same problem!

So strange! And why did the app suddenly open by itself?
