iPhones are water-resistant --not water proof.

That’s NOT what that means.

That means that a test article under tightly controlled, highly repeatable test conditions passed the “test criteria” … essentially validating the underlying device design when new.

It does NOT mean that EVERY in-service device - after use and aging - will also pass even that same criteria in “uncontrolled” real world conditions for the life of the product.

It DOES mean that on-average; a device with such a rating might reasonably be expected be less-susceptible to ingress than a device w/o the rating.

This is why the IP ratings mean nothing to me. It should not mean anything to you either. What's important is that you never, ever keep your phone near water. And if it does touch water, clean it immediately. The humidity WILL seep inside the phone regardless of the seals.
