Hello
I finally upgraded to Sonoma 14.5 and then remembered I have to update Word and Excel. I think I selected automatic updates but am confused as to why I am getting these messages, most importantly, the red font "update required." I cannot tap anywhere to do the actual update. (please see screenshots below). Does anyone know how to actually complete the Word/Excel updates? Thank you in advance.

What Microsoft Office license do you have?
The 16.78 shown in your screenshot is the final update for Office 2019. If that is the license that you have, you would either need to make a one-time purchase of Office Home & Student 2021 or purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription in order to update to the current version. I bought the apps a long time ago. I think they came on a disc. Can't afford to buy the update now as I had my car repaired and it cost a lot. Maybe sometime in the future. It wouldn't hurt if I continue with the old version, right? Thanks.
I personally wouldn't worry about continuing with the old version but there have been some security updates.

Upgrading Office:
If required for work and or school, then you should most certainly perform the upgrade, sticking with MS Office.
Still want to use the old version?
Restore you Mac from a Backup:
Did you ever back up your Mac prior to all of this? If so then restore your Mac from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, that way your can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong from here on out.
