Google has strengthened its security and older operating systems are no longer directly compatible.

To connect your Gmail account on your iPad:

  1. First of all, delete the Gmail account.
  2. Then, you will have to create an application password: Google - Application Password.
  3. Finally, when you add the Gmail account in Mail on your iPad, choose "Other" and not "Google". Fill in your email address and application password.

You need to have 2-factor authentication activated on your Google account to be able to generate app passwords. If you do and have trouble accessing the link above, try this direct link instead: https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords.

You can't use the Gmail app. It requires iPadOS 15.0 or later.

That leaves connecting your Gmail account to your Mail application (Internet Accounts), or logging into the Gmail Web site and using the Web browser interface.

Google may well consider the Mail app in iOS 10 to be insecure. If so, you won't be able to connect directly with your main Gmail password. You might be able to generate a Google "app password" (for use only with Mail on the iPhone), and set up a Google Internet Account on the iPhone with that "app password."

If it turns out to be impossible to connect the iOS 10 Mail app to Gmail, or to use the iOS 10 Safari app to use the Gmail Web interface, your choices may be to give up using Gmail on your iPad, or to buy a new(er) iPad.
