Is VO2 Max Calculation Less Accurate for Older Adults?

Does the VO2 max calculation penalize you for being old? I just did a very comfortable mile walk/run where the watch said I was in zone 4 for most of it but I could have easily talked throughout

If you’re a serious runner get a chest strap that Bluetooth connects to Apple Watch. It’s more accurate. However, the correct way to accurately measure VO2 Max is on a treadmill and hooked up to a breathing apparatus and monitors via cables.


The formula should be easy to find online but age and heart rate are major factors. You can also use a calculator.

But as my performance actually gets noticeably better my watch fusses at me for my heart rate being too high and my VO2 max calculation is going down. And I can run twice as far at the same pace (or a little faster) as I could 2 months ago. I’m thinking I can’t really rely on the watch’s numbers. I think it may be penalizing me for a heart rate that it thinks is too high for a 78-year-old. My last mile was almost all in zone 4 per my watch and I could have talked easily throughout
