I had to reset my MacBook pro due to having issues with it and it installed MacOS Mountain Lion but I want to update it to the latest supported Catalina but when I open the appstore it says that it cannot connect and i have Wi-Fi also I cant access the apple page on safari but can on chrome where i tried to download the dmg to install Catalina but it told me it was corrupted help!

Before doing all that the easiest way to install Catalina might be to boot Recovery mode using the key chord that will offer to install the latest macOS version compatible with your Mac:

To add to this: The OP may need to do that using a browser on a modern Mac or PC – then put the .DMG onto something like a USB flash drive (as a regular data file) for transfer to the old Mac.
The version of Safari in Mountain Lion might not be able to access How to download and install macOS - Apple Support due to changes in https security.
The servers on OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6 (both released in 2012) have had constant server issues for the last couple of years from expiring certificates. We just have to hope that Apple renews them.
I expect that to be required.
