Cant update Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

I had to reset my MacBook pro due to having issues with it and it installed MacOS Mountain Lion but I want to update it to the latest supported Catalina but when I open the appstore it says that it cannot connect and i have Wi-Fi also I cant access the apple page on safari but can on chrome where i tried to download the dmg to install Catalina but it told me it was corrupted help!

You needed to upgrade to El Capitan as an interim step, by downloading its .dmg using a browser. Open its installer app and accomplish the upgrade, after which you can upgrade in the usual manner (App Store).


Before doing all that the easiest way to install Catalina might be to boot Recovery mode using the key chord that will offer to install the latest macOS version compatible with your Mac:


  • Option-Command-R: When you press and hold these three keys at startup, Recovery might offer the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

To add to this: The OP may need to do that using a browser on a modern Mac or PC – then put the .DMG onto something like a USB flash drive (as a regular data file) for transfer to the old Mac.
