"Apple Pay has been disabled because the security settings of this Mac were modified" message in Wallet & Apple Pay settings

The above message has not reappeared in my settings. There are no options to correct this for a Mac with Apple Silicon. The article opened by the "Learn More" button is no help.

This is the second time this happened - previously an apple support tech had me create an additional admin user, and set up Apple Pay with that user, to clear the message, but that's not very convenient - you have to go through the entire user setup process again.

Anyone else seeing this error come up out of nowhere or have a suggestion to fix? I'm on a M3 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5 - no updates to be applied.

Thanks

The other thing that is likely a possibility, but cannot confirm myself, is the Ace tool used by Rogue Amoeba. Normally when you install this tool you have to reduce security on your computer by going to the Startup Security Utility when booting.

  • Did you do this when it was installed?
  • I can see in the EtreCheck report that it is currently set to Full Security, but was this recently changed?
  • Which Rogue Amoeba app do you have that uses the Ace Extension?
  • Was this installed on your current M3 Mac or was it transferred from a previous Mac when you set up your computer?
  • Here are the install links for ACE in case you don't remember which method you used to install it.

And finally, has there been a recent change to Little Snitch? The network extension is showing "Removed after restart", so not sure if you attempted to uninstall it and still need to restart your computer before that extension is removed. I haven't seen any other reports of Little Snitch causing problems with Apple Pay, but it would not surprise me if a packet sniffer extension would be a security concern for Apple Pay or even if a connection was blocked that Apple uses for Apple Pay.

Thank you for the suggestion. It worked! EtreCheck pointed out what caused the problem: - in my case, System Integrity Protection (SIP) was disabled. To determine whether System Integrity Protection is actually enabled, open Terminal and execute the following command:

csrutil status

If System Integrity Protection is disabled, or if it shows a custom configuration you didn’t set yourself, follow these steps to enable SIP:

1. Boot Recovery Mode by holding down Command-R while you turn on or restart your Mac. Release the keys when the Apple logo and a progress bar appear.

2. When the main Utilities window appears, don’t select any utilities presented. Instead, go to the top menu bar (where the Apple logo resides) and click on Utilities. Then, select Terminal.

3. Execute the following command:

csrutil enable

4. Restart your Mac to apply the change.

I want to thank you for this... I'd been going around and around with this issue. I ended up enabling a new admin account, adding one card (didn't get a "reset" message), logged back into my regular account, went to enable ApplePay, and then the "reset" message DID show up and I was able to get ApplePay set up on my usual account, So it's sorted for me.

Automatic login is turned off because FileVault is enabled.

I looked at the other note - thanks. That's what support had me do the first time. I did it again - created another user (with admin privileges), logged in as that user. Tried to set up Apple Pay, reset Apple Pay, switched back to me, and re-enabled Apple Pay for my original username. I guess I'll keep the other user account around for now, in case I need it again. Thanks for your suggestions.

It would be handy if there was just a "reset Apple Pay" option somewhere on the control panel (yes, I know that's an archaic term, but I don't know what the various settings tabs/windows are properly called these days...)

Do you have Automatic Login turned on at  > Settings > Users & Groups?

If so, try shutting it off.

Here is another user (fotomarc) who had the same problem and was able to solve it using a technique similar to what you had previously done, but without the hassle of setting it up again.

I’ve seen several variations of things to do when you create the second Admin user account.

One variation says to not reset Apple Pay when you create a new Admin account. Just login, try to add a card, dismiss the reset message and log out. When you login to your >old< user account, you’ll see the reset Apple Pay and then reset Apple Pay.

I’ll have to search for the other variations.

Thanks for the tips, but no luck.

Install security responses was already on. Toggling on and off, and checking all items on that page didn't help.

Restarting to deal with the Little Snitch extensions didn't help. That app was recently updated from v5 to v6. I didn't attempt to uninstall v5 - just started using v6.

I used to have AudioHijack from Rogue Amoeba, and deleted that within the last year - It may have been transferred from my previous Mac. I just removed the ACE plugin from the Library and restarted again, but that didn't make a difference. I still have other Rogue Amoeba apps - just reinstalled Piezo, but it didn't try to reinstall or repair ACE. Didn't see any instructions on the website to remove ACE specifically unless you've installed it after installing another another app.

I totally agree that option to Reset Apple Pay should be included or at least some guidance to prevent that from happening in the first place. While I am sure Apple is aware of this issue, it does not hurt to provide Feedback where it will be reviewed by Apple and with enough complaints may increase the priority to resolve it with a future update.

Anyways, glad you are up and running again and sorry I could not find the root cause, requiring you to do that workaround.
