This seems to be a well documented issue. The sound has suddenly gone very thin, tinny and quiet.
I have tried on a different system on an external drive, reset the PRAM and fitted replacement speakers.
None of these have worked.
Does anybody have a fix for it ?

The internal speakers are failing which unfortunately is very common. The speaker cones seem to deteriorate very quickly (also occurs on the 2013-2015 models). You can try to see if Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider is able to get replacement speakers, otherwise you will need to rely on external speakers or headphones/earbuds. Any internal speakers you may find online are either pulled from broken units or are well used and will have the same issue since it is the age of the speaker that is the problem. FYI, it is easy to replace the internal speakers of the 13" model (just need to be careful disconnecting the speaker cable from the Logic Board), but the speakers I have received from third party vendors have been a very mixed bag and not worth the effort.

Exactly what I thought but the problem is still there after I fitted a pair of new speakers.
I've run it off a clean system on an external drive, fitted new speakers, reset the PRAM, and created a new user but still the sound is tinny and quiet.
When I listen on headphones it is perfect.
I'm baffled
