iphone 4 cannot sign in to app store, or create a new apple id

I have inherited an ancient but great condition iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.2 and was hoping to repurpose it for playing and misc tasks (browsing) etc.

However, when I try to sign in via Settings -> iTunes & App Store, I am told "Could Not Sign In" "Your Apple ID or password is incorrect". I have have changed my password to something simpler, tried several times and confirmed I can sign in via web browser so fairly confident I am typing it correctly.

In addition, when I try to select "Create New Apple ID" from the same place, it takes me to a blank white screen that never appears to load (other than the system bar, it is white). Browsing via Safari seems to work, so I believe my internet connection is fine.

Anyway if anybody has any advice on things I can try please do sign off. Alternatively feel free to have a laugh at what is a bit of fools errand, I probably deserve it!

Thanks for your patience - first time apple user!

If this is a plain iPhone 4, vs. an iPhone 4s, it can only run up to iOS 7 vs. iOS9. This support article about iCloud features may interest you since you'll find you're shut out of just about all of them.

System requirements for iCloud - Apple Support

You'll also find that the web browser may have problems rendering web pages. Even if you find one that is relatively "up to date", all of them rely upon Apple's webkit software for basic functions and that will be the iOS 7 version for your phone. I found that using an iPhone 4s had problems with many web sites running the current version of some browsers, and it was running iOS9. It just didn't have the up to date tools behind the browser.

Your iPhone 4 might make a nice mp3 player though!

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Reset Network Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings: Only network settings are removed.
    1. When you reset network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings that weren’t installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain turned on.
    2. To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile. This also removes other settings and accounts provided by the profile. See Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone in this guide.
    3. To remove network settings installed by MDM, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the management, then tap Remove Management. This also removes other settings and certificates provided by MDM. See “Mobile device management (MDM)” in the iOS Deployment Reference.
    4. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
  3. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  4. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

If you can access your Apple ID through a web browser that indicates your device is Activation Locked.

If you are the owner or the owner has shared all information with you then to open Activation Lock:- If it is Activation locked, read here --> Turn off Activation Lock - Apple Support Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Learn how to remove a device from a previous owner's account.

If you are not the owner and do not have the Apple ID and Password then there is no way that you can get into this iPhone unless the original owner shares the Apple ID and password with you. If you are lucky you can get into this iPhone if they (owner) accidentally remove the device from their Apple ID.

Thanks for the info Limnos. It is a standard iPhone 4 and understand it is limited to iOS 7.

Yes, my ambitions for it were limited to just web browsing and mp3 playing. As you've noted web browsing is definitely haywire even on basic sites and not much I can do about that so written it off.

As for mp3 playing, I've done some fumbling and after some hiccups (it does not like playing music or even responding to volume rocker button presses when the usb cable was plugged in, no idea if normal or not but quite baffling to me) seem to have something rudimentary working now!
