is it very difficult to replace the DVD Drive if needed for a 2008 IMAC?

I would like to use my 2008 iMac to view/scroll thru instructional DVDs, but recently the drive will not recognize a DVD. If I can't find a solution, is it difficult for a user to replace the DVD drive in that iMac? I have replaced hard drives in desktop units and batteries in laptops successfully.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.7

Not extremely difficult, but by no means a simple thing to do, since you need to take the iMac's screen entirely off to access the drive and there's several fiddly cables to remove before you can separate the screen from the enclosure.

It would be much, much simpler, to use an external drive connected to one of the USB ports.

Also, I would verify the instructional DVDs are Mac compatible. If they are meant for Windows or have some other formatting, the Mac may not be able to read them, but the drive may not need to be changed in that case.

Try other DVDs and see if they work. This will confirm whether the issue is with the drive or the discs.

Also, blowing some compressed air in the slot, may clean the laser, if its a bit dirty.
