AirTag shows inaccurate locations

I bought an air tag for my grandson to take on a trip and shared it with him and his mum and dad. He arrived in London, and my (owner of the tag) location for him is at Heartrow airport, while I see his phone is at Oxford, and his mum and dad show both his air tag and phone at Oxford, where he actually is. What is going on?

Unlike the iPhone, which uses GPS, the Apple AirTags rely on Bluetooth and the Apple "Find My Network."

Basically, the tag broadcasts a Bluetooth signal every 3-5 mins. Should another iPhone be within range (30-40') of the tag, it can pick up this signal. It can then relay the tag's ID, along with the phone's GPS location, to the Apple servers over the Internet. This is where you would see location updates with the Find My app on your iPhone.

As you might guess, a number f things have to occur to get these location updates. That is why Apple did not design these tags for tracking. Instead, they are primarily designed to locate a missing stationary object ... like misplaced car keys.
