Valid Credit Card Declined

So I previously submitted a post regarding my CC being repeatedly being declined for zero reasons. Card is valid, plenty of available $$$, CCV is valid, not expired, etc.

Then I get receive the following pre canned message, obviously AI response.

”A “card declined" message means that the issuer of the credit or debit card you have on file in your iTunes account rejected a charge or account confirmation. It is not an Apple problem; Apple is just passing through the message from your issuer. There are a number of reasons the charge or verification might be declined:

  • The card is not recognized in your country
  • Insufficient balance or account in arrears
  • Account suspended for suspected fraud (not necessarily by you)
  • Error in card number
  • Wrong expiration date
  • Wrong security (CVV) code
  • You are connected through a VPN provider that does not terminate near your actual location.

You need to contact the card issuer and ask why they rejected the charge; they are the one who rejected it, not the Apple Wallet.”

Not very helpful considering this clearly is an ongoing problem since at least 2020.

Maybe “blow off” was a bit too harsh; but I’m fairly confident that the issuer logged the reason(s) for the decline; the fact that the CSRs - for whatever reason - can’t provide this “troubleshooting info” to their own, authenticated customers galls me.

= = = = =

I’ve found that some online merchants - including Lowes - appear retain other customer data.

While executing online ApplePay purchases, I now check - and almost always have to edit - either my phone number or my card’s billing address (or both) during the transaction.

This data NOT found anywhere in my settings, but they appear to be from historically-used data from my prior purchases with the merchant.

For example - one merchant’s transactions refuse to process unless I delete the “+4” portion of my zip code on a per-transaction basis.

Others reject the “+” prepended to my phone numbers.

Hope some of this might help.

So … what did your card’s issuer say was the reason for the “decline” ???

The entire presumably ApplePay (???) transaction (whether accepted or not) is processed entirely outside of Apple’s purview.

Apple’s “piece” in ApplePay transaction processing is essentially only as the provider of the “Wallet” app …

… which is roughly analogous to a “browser interface” into the “customer-facing side” of the payments processing system.

I have no doubt that might be what you were told by the CSR, as totally void of factual info as it might be. (i.e. they “blew you off” rather than making the extra effort necessary to get you — their customer - a true actionable answer)

Presumably this was an online ApplePay transaction at Lowes.com?

Was it an AppleCard Mastercard or another “legacy” credit card ?
