macbook air stuck in recovery mode after reset

I am getting ready to package my MacBook Air to turn in. I did the factory reset and now it’s only starting up in recovery mode. I erased the MacBook on recovery mode, restarted, and it’s still in recovery mode. Is the laptop completely wiped and ready to turn in? Or are there additional steps I need to take?

Hi booboobear23,

How did you factory reset your Mac? There's a couple of ways to do it:

  • If you used Erase All Content and Settings, your Mac will briefly start up in Recovery to activate. Just connect it to Ethernet or Wi-Fi and let the activation process complete. If you're asked for your Apple ID, provide it when prompted - this will release Activation Lock.
  • If you used Recovery Assistant or Disk Utility (Intel or Apple Silicon) in macOS Recovery to erase your Mac, you'll need to reinstall macOS before selling or giving away your Mac.
