My iMac with macOS Sanoma 14.5 update started asking me for password after I tried to login. I went to system settings and it wasn't allowing me to turn on the Touch ID option. I deleted the finger print and tried to add afresh. Now the Touch ID menu disappeared! I restarted my Mac a few times now. No luck.
Yes, it worked finally. What I needed to do is plug in the Magic Keyboard and restart the iMac while it's connected. Then the menu to add finger print and unlock using the finger print appeared. Thank you.

It would be silly of me to own an iMac that doesn't support Touch ID and complain it doesn't work. As I noted, I have an iMac with a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID that suddenly stopped working. I deleted a previously stored finger print to try and re-add and saw that the menu stopped showing up
Also, please tell us which model of iMac you are running. I have a 2020 intel iMac and I believe Touch ID doesn't work on my iMac.
