character accents suddenly stopped working in Mail, Pages, etc.

Tonight, all character accents suddenly stopped working. When I press and hold an "e" for example, it just repeats eeeeee. No French accents graves, nothing. Same with other characters. Did I suddenly press something (I have no idea what) and can it be reversed? Thanks.

Mac 2015, OS Monterey 12.7.5.
