Custom keyboard shortcuts don't work all the time

Hi,

I’m calling for a bit of help because I encounter some troubleshooting with my personalized keyboard shortcuts on macOS, specifically on the Reminders app.

I’ve created some keys combinations to activate more easily the sorting out by date and have a quicker access to the informations on each reminder, but those combinations don’t work very well all the time.

I’ve tried to write them into the Keyboard Shortcuts page in the System Settings app with their menu path like « Menu function->Secondary Function->Function that I’d like to use with a shortcut », but this doesn’t solve the problem on Reminders. My custom shortcut only work if I first open a menu’s tab on the top screen (no matter which tab). For instance, I can click on the File tab, then click back somewhere else to close this tab and, from then, I’ll be able to use my shortcut combination to run the specific function I want from somewhere else in the app, naming the sorting function.

Intriguingly, this doesn’t occur in the Finder where I’ve also created a specific shortcut only to access a certain folder. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that, at least in the French version of macOS, some functions can be called by different paths depending from where you show them in the app? E.g the « None » option for due dates, that appears whether under the path « Due Date > None » or under the path of « Edition > Mark due date as > None ».

I wanted to post here a short video capture of my screen, but I don’t know how to post it on this Forum (it seems that only images car be posted).

Anyway, thanks for your help!

PS: Forgive my English, it's not perfect! (but it could be worse: I could have spoke with my French accent!)

I doubt this is the problem, but you do not need to use the full path to the menu command, unless there are two identically named commands in different menus. You only need to add the command name exactly as it appears in the menu.

in general, you can use commands in contextual menus, but if it is a menu generated by clicking on some widget on the interface, it may not work until you open that menu.

Hello Hugo.r

The custom keyboard shortcuts must match the displayed language. Adding English to the list of available languages will not be sufficient. If you define the custom keyboard shortcuts in English, the primary Mac language must be English for them to work.

I wonder if using Automator might be a solution around the issue. I’m not well versed in Automator but see if this discussion can help you: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2111736/applescript-or-automator-to-click-on-menus-in-an-application.

On the other hand, I have another shortcut combination that works perfectly without the whole path, and this one is for a function that apply in two different tasks : None ("Aucune" in French) for the Due date, and None for the Priority. By chance, it triggers the "right" one for me when I use it (the one for the Due date), but it could as well trigger the other one, and I wonder how the system choose which one it'll use whereas it has got the choice between two identical names?

I don't know, exactly, but…

My guess is it searches the menus sequentially and chooses the first it finds that matches. That is when you need the path to the command in the keyboard shortcut. I also don't know how it would enumerate the menus, but suppose it works from left to right, top to bottom.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer! Please forgive me for the late reply, I hadn't the time to properly look at this since my post.

You've got here my command path for the shortcut, and the actual path that shows up when I click to find the command (named "Échéance") by myself clicking in the menu.

You also have that one in the screenshots.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I’ve tried it but it didn’t work. I put the English menu names, but the shortcut disappeared next to its command when I went on the menu tab, like if there was no shortcut at all for the command. I’ve tried to add English to the Mac’s languages I use, but didn’t work either.

Am I doing something the wrong way?

Thanks!
