I would like to move my photos from the general area of my Iphone to individual folders, but when I do this they still remain in the general photo area and if I delete them they are gone from the phone.

If by "general photo area", you mean the "Recents" album in the "Photos App", you cannot.
The way it works is it keeps all photos in the Recent Album always, and any sorting into folders or albums you do is a soft or virtual sort, that means nothing is ever moved out of Recents, they are just sorted into the albums or folders you place them in virtually.
If you delete something from Recents, then its remvoed from there and any and all albums you have them in.
This is done, so you can have a photo in more than one album or folder without duplicating the photo.

How can I move some photos from my main area of IPhone to a folder and not have it show up in the main area of my IPhone?
