iPhone 13 - SMC Panic Assertion Failed 0x4000

Hi,

I recently bought a refurbished iPhone 13pro, and I requested a battery replacement done by a 3rd party (so it's an unofficial battery). The phone is in perfect condition and running the latest iOS update (17.1.1), but it reboots at random intervals.

I tried force restarting and resetting my settings (which cleared the issue for a few days), but a few days ago the problem appeared again, and now it's restarting 2-3 times a day.

Today I looked through the Analytics Data and I found 18 panic reports (from the past 1-2 weeks) containing ASSERTION FAILED most of them being "SMC Panic Assertion Failed" and a few "SMC BSC failed". All of the reports say "sensor array 0-6 is 0 * 0 , 0 * 4000 , 0 * 0 0 * 0 0 * 0 , 0x0". According to what I found online it seems that "0x4000" is a kernel issue located in a part of the battery.

What I find curious is that the issue does not occur at a 3-minute interval as others have said and I only got the "unofficial battery" notification twice, making me think it doesn't properly recognise the battery and seems to think it's an official battery.

What you bought was a low quality battery that is not capable of outputting the proper current to run the phone. This is why you should only use genuine Apple parts.

You can try to take it to Apple to see if they will replace the battery but usually they won't touch it if your phone has been tampered with by non authorized personnel.

If Apple won't work on it, try taking it to Batteries Plus or Ifixit and see if they have a higher quality battery than the one you have in there now.
