Can I use my iMac M1 without a screen?

Place the external display directly in front of the 24" M1 iMac.

I do not recommend removing, covering or replacing the display something else.

Select the external display as the main display and run a solid black desktop image on the iMac.

Yes, with the second display connected do this in display system preferences.

Displays > click on the external display > Use as = Main Display then restart

I've just tested this on my M1 iMac and it works, I do have my iMac set under Mission Caontrol as Displays Have Separate Spaces [on] but this may not be required.

I don't advise messing with the iMac, just turn your iMac to face away from you as this will maintain the cooling which is required for good functioning.

BTW if you have a thunderbolt connection display with no cdmi then no need to by an adapter but if you use hdmi you will need an adapter like this

That cover blocks the cooling vents and should not be used when the iMac is turned on.

No you cannot turn off the internal display but you will be covering it so it really doesn’t matter. You can also put the computer to the side or even on a chair if you are going to use an external display. Another option is if your desk has the depth is to put the iMac behind the external display.
