Whether putting the internal drive into this enclosure will get your data back, I don't know. We don't know whether that SSD is still working – and, if it is still working, whether the data on it has been corrupted.

If your MacBook Air had been any more recent, pulling out the internal SSD would not even be an option. I believe that in all MacBook Airs that have T2 security chips or Apple Silicon processors, the SSDs are soldered in, and the contents are encrypted with keys held in the T2 security chip or Apple Silicon processor. Fail to make any backups there, and you can't even hope for a long-shot "Hail Mary" pass.

Should we assume you were not making backups or syncing your data to a cloud service?

I don't believe the SSD in that model is removable. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. If it's not, then you're pretty much hosed unless you have a backup.
