Can Find My iPhone app still locate the device while it is powered off?

Can the find my iphone app still locate the device while it is powered off? I believe that is not possible, though their are claims that it can still be located.

Even if somehow the device were able to get location information, how would that information be relayed back?

My point is not about last location when it was powered off, but ongoing up to date location.

Yes....but the conditions have to be right.

As a test, try the following:

Tap Settings > Tap General > Tap Shut Down

Do you see the phrase "iPhone Findable After Power Off"?

It's there for a reason

When the iPhone is powered off, it still will send out a very brief intermittent Bluetooth signal with information about its current location.

That information can be picked up by other iPhones with an Internet connection that are in close proximity to the lost phone. The more iPhones close by the better the chances of picking up a signal from the lost phone. Technically, this process is called "crowd sourcing".

You've probably heard of AirTag. This is how AirTag works.

The process is not perfect of course. As I said, the conditions have to be right, and eventually, the battery will run down.
