MacBook running macOS Ventura closes apps on sleep

My computer keeps closing all apps when it goes to sleep. I don't remember this being an issue a few weeks ago, but its possible my memory is just bad. I checked my Privacy & Security settings and the option to "Log out immediately after inactivity" was grayed out. I tested out enabling it and setting it to 600 minutes and that did nothing. Its really disruptive to any type of work I'm doing. Thoughts on fixes?

There have been numerous reports of issues after sleep with Silicon MBs. Many have worked around the issue by by putting the MB to sleep but just use the screensaver and let the screen go dark after a set amount of time. Longer lengths of time away from the MB they shut it down as the boot time is not an inconvenience.

Just some food for thought.
