How to fix erratic pointer behavior on an old Magic Mouse?

I have an old Magic Mouse, the one that used AA Batteries. It worked just fine until some days ago, when the pointer on both of my Macs started acting like crazy. It does this very often and I have to shut it off and the turn it back on ti fix it. Also, sometimes it works but when I leave the mouse still and return back to it the click and multi touch works but the tracking not.

What batteries are you using? Rechargeables being just a teeny bit too short, and not making good contact, are a known issue. Stick in another pair of alkaline AAs and see if that does the trick. Swabbing the battery contacts in the mouse with a Q-tip and a drop of vinegar can remove oxidation, and this will also help ensure good contact.

Then, unfortunately, chances are that it has finally failed. AFAIK, Apple does not repair them, so you may want to consider getting a new mouse.

The only other thing I can think of is some type of debris worked its way into the mouse's optical sensor port. Using a flashlight and a cotton swab may be a way to clean it out should you find any.
