Do I need to change my ipad battery due to overheating during use?

Before you read please note this is what my daughter has told me so it may not be completely true

so my child was using my ipad on charge. It was on her pillow (she knows it shouldn’t have been as it can overheat) and on around 60% therefore it would have gotten hot. She had been playing roblox which would have made the ipad hot whether it was on charge or not. She said that she got bored and decided to watch some youtube and after a few videos the screen randomly blanked.

She came to me to tell me and we googled it. No answers.

Apparently it was the black screen of death and we tried to “force restart” it which didn’t work. I did a bit more research and got to a conclusion that it may need the battery replaced as it possibly overheated and damaged the ipad.

However, she said she got no warning saying the ipad was too hot.

Does the battery need replaced?

I’ll link below to the Apple support article on the matter. I think your best resource will be a trip to the Apple Store after making an appointment. The 9th gen iPad was just discontinued 2 months ago (May 2024) and might be worth replacing the battery.

My only self repair idea for you at this point is leaving it on a charger for several hours. Make sure the cable is good, charger is good and outlet is on. You’d be amazed the number of broken items I’ve fixed by flipping a switch and turning the outlet on. 😀

You might also want t consider the difference between replacement cost of a battery and an Apple refurbished iPad. The link is below also. A refurbished iPad has a full 1 year Apple warranty and is eligible for Apple Care. If your daughter is going to continue to use your iPad, it might be a good way to go.

Hello~ If the forced restart correctly performed did not help you may need to set up an appointment and review your options w/Apple. Click on below…

It unlikely your daughter did any thing wrong but a hardware issue such as a completely dead battery due to normal use and aging.
