Use 2011 iMac 27' as an external monitor.

I'm trying to use my old iMac 2011 27' as an external monitor for my 2019 macbook pro.

The iMac doesn´t have any display port but thunderbolt 2. Is there any cable that I can use to connect the 2 computers?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

That iMac supports Target Display Mode – but it requires Thunderbolt input. You would need $80 in specialized Thunderbolt connection hardware ($50 Apple TB3-to-2 adapter + $30 TB 1/2 cable) to make the connection.

Then Target Display Mode would only be supported if your 2019 MacBook Pro was running Catalina or earlier. I would venture to guess that since all 2019 MBPs can run Ventura and Sonoma, you have upgraded past Catalina and are not particularly interested in going back.

minidisplay port and thunderbolt 2 are both availble on that socket.

Intel says Thunderbolt 2 will be able to transfer a 4K video while simultaneously displaying it on a discrete monitor.

Thunderbolt 2 incorporates DisplayPort 1.2 support, which allows for video streaming to a single 4K video monitor or dual QHD monitors. Thunderbolt 2 is backwards compatible, which means that all Thunderbolt cables and connectors are compatible with Thunderbolt 1.

Your MacBook Pro is a 2019 MacBook Pro, and it is running Mavericks?

That doesn't make sense. Apple released four MacBook Pros in 2019. All of them except the 16" one originally shipped with macOS 10.14.5 (Mojave). The 16" one shipped with macOS 10.15.1 (Catalina). None can run OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). It's way too old.

, and i read the target display mode indicating that in theory is not possible. Although i found info in youtube proving that with a specific cable somebody managed to make it work…the issue is that they used the minidisplay port and my iMac only has thunderbolt 2.

Are you trying to say that your MacBook Pro is not from 2019, but from 2009? All of the 2009 MacBook Pros had Mini DisplayPorts, could run Mavericks (10.9), and could be upgraded as far as El Capitan (10.11).

None have Thunderbolt. They cannot generate the Thunderbolt signal required by a 2011 iMac.

if possible i really would like to keep using the beautiful screen of the iMac 27’ instead of generating waste and by a new monitor

Maybe instead of using the 2009 MacBook Pro as the computer, you could use the 2011 iMac as the computer. It not only has the larger screen, but is a newer computer – and unlike a 2009 MacBook Pro, can run High Sierra.
