I get a black screen when I open the Messages app on my iPhone 14 Pro Max

I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 17.5.1. When I open the Messages app I get a black screen. If I open Settings and select the Messages app there the screen freezes. I’ve tried shutting the apps and restarting the phone but no luck

If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPhone - Apple Support*

*Turn off and restart iMessage and FaceTime

Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.
Go to Settings > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
Restart your iPhone.
Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.

Same. Getting black screen, white screen, or frozen screen. Icon is indicating incoming notifications.
