iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) with 3TB Fusion Drive now an unbootable Paper Weight

Yes my iMac died and I did manage to scrape most everything off the HDD. I can not get it to boot anymore and have upgraded to a Mac Studio over 6 months ago. I was going to tear it down and remove HDD to scrap it but saw what seems to be easy (only if you do it for a living) DIY HDD replacement. But I would only want to replace the HDD and not use the board mounted SDD that came with it. What would be the best procedure after opening it up and exposing HDD and replacing with SSD (preferences?) and getting it to start up and run without the old board mounted SSD and a new SSD for the main drive. Sounds doable to me but need a push in the correct direction for starters. I would likely keep the old restored iMac as a spare computer as it has a beautiful 27 in Retina display but in no hurry.

If the original internal Apple SSD is 128GB, then you may be able to use it as extra storage. You should erase that SSD regardless.

If you don't like seeing the original SSD mounted automatically each time you boot the Mac, then you can tell macOS to prevent it from mounting automatically using the instructions in the following article (you can still manually mount the SSD for use if you desire):
