Internet connection for Apple Watch independent of I phone
Apple Watch paired to my iPhone needs to have independent internet connection

If your Apple Watch is near your iPhone, it will ALWAYS use low energy Bluetooth and ask your iPhone to use its radios.
If the iPhone is out of range, but the Apple Watch has WiFi access, it will use WiFi, unless what it needs is only available via the iPhone, then it will use WiFi to talk to your iPhone, otherwise, it will just connect directly to the service on the Internet.
If you have a cellular Apple Watch, and the iPhone is not nearby, and you do not have WiFi access, then the Apple Watch will use cellular LTE data. If what the Apple Watch needs, requires the iPhone, then the Apple Watch will use cellular LTE data to connect to the iPhone over the Internet.
