Can’t Set Up Apple Watch for Family Member

Tried setting up a family member’s new Apple Watch SE cellular but I keep getting an error that states, “Could Not Sign In. The operation couldn't be completed (CDPStateError error -2.)”

I’m the parent/guardian on Family Share. Also tried it on my wife’s phone (Family organizer) and she also gets the same error. Our IPhone software are up to date. This error pops up during setup when it tries signing in with the AppleID and entering the correct password; it’ll just load and say signing in and it’ll take a few minutes before I get the error message above. I tried unpairing and repairing to no avail for both our IPhones. Thanks for the assist.

I was getting this same error trying to do Family Set Up for my husband's watch. He doesn't have an iPhone yet and because of that I sorted out all of the Apple ID requirements and got him into my Family group via my iPhone settings. That was a wild goose chase on its own.

After getting this error message over and over, I tried restarting/resetting, making sure the watch wasn't paired in any other of our apple accounts because it was linked to my son's account previously, and searched up the error code. I found this forum but didn't try logging into iCloud because I thought logging into appleid.apple.com was the same thing. Nope. Definitely try logging into iCloud.com with the Apple ID you want to use for the Apple Watch. I used my MacBook Pro for this. It worked immediately after doing that. I don't know why that worked but it did.

A friend of mine had the same issue. Here is what I did to solve the CDPStateError -2:

At any Desktop:

Log into appleid.com with the account of your kid.

Check if there are any messages to accept License Agreements. Accept if ...

Check if there are any devices paired with the account, if the watch appears, delete it.

Change the password of your kids account.

Log off from Appleid.com.

At the iPhone and Apple Watch:

Make Sure you have the latest Updates installed on both devices.

Shut down your iPhone and switch it back on ( cold start !)

Reset the Apple Watch to factory default.

On the iPhone open the Watch App and start the Family Configuration.

At the Point where you should pair the watch with your iPhone, DON´T use the QR code !

Select pair manually and follow the instructions on your watch. Skip every unnecessary option ( you can configure them later in the watch app ).

the watch should now be added to your kids account.

End the Configuration process.

After that you can configure your desired options via the App Watch.

I hope this helps at least a couple of people with their problems.

Safwan

I sell Apple products and this is so infuriating. I am a sales representative for AT&T. The issue only occurs when setting up a family Apple watch. I set it up as a personal watch, downloaded the software to the latest WatchOS, and then removed and erased the watch and attempted again.

Bottom line solution:

  1. Pair up as a personal
  2. Download the latest WatchOS Apple watch
  3. Download the latest IOS on iPhone
  4. Erase and reset watch
  5. repair as a family watch

Wrestled with this exact problem for over a week. Trying to set up a standalone watch for a family member. Finally got someone on the phone with Apple that said for users with new Apple IDs that have not yet signed into other devices, they are (sometimes) not recognized for standalone pairing on a watch. He recommended to sign in on an old iPhone, etc. on the new family member's account, and THEN do the standalone pairing with the watch. It worked first time after that. Hope this helps!

We had the same problem this weekend with an SE series 2 that we were setting up for my 10 year old. 4 1/2 hours at the AT&T store, multiple calls with apple over 2 days that were escalated to a senior advisor who then told me she had to send information off to the engineers, and nothing was working. I took matters into my own hands and decided to try every approach in every forum I could find. The solution ended up being in a post from a few years ago that recommended logging into a macbook. I created a new profile on my macbook for my daughter, logging in with her new apple ID that we had created for the watch. I went through the whole set up process for her icloud on the macbook, which I had also done on a normal desktop with no luck, but there were more steps including some additional T&C to accept. After working through the set up of the macbook with her apple ID, I started the watch setup over and it went through with no problem. I am not apply savvy in the slightest, but it almost seemed like the apple ID had to be validated/recognized on another apple device before it would work on the watch. I'm not sure what the answer would be if you didn't have a macbook, but it should work for those that do.
