Cannot text new contacts when added

I met a new friend at school, and when we decided to trade numbers, he gave me his and I went to add it on my iPad. When I put all his information in, (number, name, pronouns) I clicked add and the contact was added. When I went to go text him, I typed in “hey it’s me, you there?” And I was about to send it, but the send button wouldn’t work. It wouldn’t let me press it. Any possible help will be deeply appreciated!!!

Does this new friend have an Apple device and use iMessages (blue) or do they have an Android device and use SMS (green) green messages? If the latter, you will need to have an iPhone connected to your iPad in order to send him messages. If he only gave you a phone number, I'm guessing SMS.

If you don't have an iPhone, you can't send SMS messages from an iPad.
