Close captioning on Apple TV

I do not have an Apple TV remote. I use my phone. I cannot get close captioning to turn on. It used to work at one time but now it doesn’t work at all. There’s an icon on the screen of my phone that looks like it could be related to that and I tap it but nothing happens. Then when I hit play, I get the little dialog box on the bottom right hand corner that in all of my searches tells me that that is the box for close captioning, but I cannot access that box. I can’t turn it on. I can’t turn it off, how do I do this without a remote? I have an Apple TV 4K with the most latest updated software.

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 17

For automatic activation of Closed Captioning (when available in the stream), there is a default setting:

Settings﹥Accessibility﹥Subtitles and Captioning﹥Closed Captions and SDH﹥Off|On

For manual activation of Closed Captioning during streaming (when available in the stream), there is the overlay controls for Subtitles to use. Its icon in the speech balloon. Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app - Apple Support

  • Some streams may not have Closed Captioning.
  • Some apps may not use Apple’s built-in methods, but may instead offer their own different in-app controls (e.g. YouTube).

If the Apple TV box is functional and already set up, then the software remote on iPhone can do all the same navigation controls as the physical remote, and in the same way.
